2. Objectives of the Unit

11C、D
The nursing-surgical Care Unit is designated for the transplantation of severed limbs, flap reconstruction. It provides medical care for patients undergoing microsurgical blood-vessel reconstruction and those who have had DIEP flap transfer. By attending regular professional training in patient's prevention and care, our highly qualified staff provides the finest in nursing care for post surgically monitoring of the blood circulation in the transferred flaps.

3. History

December 1,1979: officially established with 24 beds
August 22, 1983: added up to 44 beds
August 21, 1988: adjusted to 30 beds because of the closure and renovation of the first-class units
December 21, 1988: total beds in the unit : 62

1. Specialized Divisions : Trauma, Plastic Surgery, Surgery

Objective Patients::
Patients who are having blood-vessel microscopic surgery to replant severed body parts, connecting severed limbs/fingers, transplanting toes, DIEP flap transfer, nursing for traumatic limb fracture and flap transfer of above neck tumor, etc.

2. Professional Nursing Care Procedures:

First Day

-Introduction to the facilities :
Introduce the care units and facilities to the patient's family or major caretaker.

-Tube and drain care : Change dressing for the insertion of an intravenous drip ( IV set ) for antibiotics.

-Monitoring flaps: Monitor blood circulation in the reconstructed areas hourly or while needed

Second Day : Regular Care and Hygiene

-Changing clothes and body care : Help in bed bathing and changing clothes.

-Monitoring flaps : Monitor blood circulation in the reconstructed areas and nurse the wounds hourly or while needed.

-Recording output and input amount

Third Day : Regular Care

-Changing clothes and body care : Help in bed bathing and changing clothes.

-Monitoring flaps: Monitor blood circulation in the reconstructed areas and nurse the wounds
   hourly or while needed.

-Recording output and input amount

-Giving instruction for nursing at home

-Deciding date of release from the hospital according to the doctor's recommendation

3. Average Days in Hospital : 5-7

In addition to general care, mental and social care support is also provided by our nursing division or from the cooperating psychiatrists and social workers, to address the immediate needs of the patients and their family such as cosmesis changes after the surgery. For those who had cancer reconstruction in the areas above the neck, our nursing staff will offer health education before and after the surgery as well as to introduce the care units and the surroundings area to reduce possible anxiety.
